Amana Introduces UL2-40 Multi-Speed Furnaces
by HVAC Distributors September 16, 2024Amana is introducing UL2-40-compliant multi-speed furnaces to go with R32 systems. This is a part of the transition to A2L refrigerants.
Background:
- UL60335 2-40 (UL2-40) requires extra controls for mitigation in the event of a leak of A2L refrigerant.
- Daikin is updating the furnaces to add the extra controls.
Changes to Note:
- The new furnaces will receive new model numbers. See Appendix Two for the Nomenclature Chart.
- Mitigation control is built into the control boards. The Non-A2L Furnace Integration Kit 0230K00044 (.489914), “Dragonfly” is unnecessary.
- There is a jack directly in the control board to plug the cable from the Amana-Goodman R32 coil.
- The new furnace has a function allowing it to work with R410A systems.
- New sizes have been added. See Appendix One.
- Daikin changed the way the 80% AFUE furnaces draw in combustion air. See Appendix Three.
What’s Staying the Same:
- There is an exact one-to-one model replacement. See Appendix One.
- Performance is unchanged. See below about AHRI ratings.
- Dimensions are unchanged.
- Warranties remain the same.
System Selection Tools and AHRI Ratings:
- Although performance is unchanged, the new model numbers will include new AHRI rating numbers.
- The AHRI Directory includes these in some combinations and more are being added regularly.
Additional Items to Note:
- DO NOT mix R32 and R410A equipment to make a system.
- R32 equipment uses a much smaller charge. Remember to check the IOM.
- Sign up to receive your R32 certification! It is not required, but is best practice.
- Have the proper tools to work with R32 and R454B equipment.
Transition
HVAC Distributors will continue to stock the old models, then transition to the new models when inventory is depleted.
